Kharitonovskaya cherries were added to the State Register for cultivation on the territory of the Central Black Earth Region seventeen years ago and have since gained a large number of admirers.

Plant description

The famous Kharitonovskaya cherry variety was obtained as a result of experimental crossing of the Zhukovskaya and Diamond varieties. Crossbreeding was carried out by experienced breeders E. N. Kharitonova and O.S. Zhukov at the All-Russian Research Institute for Genetics and Selection of Fruit Plants named after Michurin.

The fruits of the Kharitonovskaya variety have a rather large size and have a diameter of the order of one and a half centimeters. The average weight of one berry is about 5 grams. Cherries are characterized by one-dimensionality and a round shape.

The main color of the berries is dark red, there is a small number of faintly visible subcutaneous points. The delicate flesh has an orange color and a sour-sweet taste, and when pressed, light reddish juice stands out. The stone is medium in size and has an oval shape, can be easily separated from ripened pulp.

Taste qualities of berries are estimated at 4.75 points. The fruits contain:

  • 15% solids;
  • slightly less than 7% of total sugars;
  • 1.5% acid;
  • 11 milligrams of ascorbic acid in 100 grams of fruit.

Berries are characterized by an average indicator of transportability and are intended for universal use.

The plant has an average height and has a spherical, medium leafy and dense crown. The height of the tree can vary from 2 to 3.5 m. Straight branches are not long enough and brown or brown. The buds pressed to the shoots have a conical shape and some sharpening.

The leaves are dark green in color, large, elliptical in shape, with a short peaking. The sheet plate is flat, with a rounded base, without pubescence. The leaf margin is characterized by large serration.

Stipules of medium size, have a significant dissection. The flowers are quite large, have a white color. The main fruiting falls on bouquet branches and last year's growths.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of the Kharitonovskaya variety cherries include high quality indicators of berries that can be used both fresh and for processing. The tree has a moderate height, which greatly facilitates the maintenance and harvesting. The variety is characterized by a stable yield, as well as increased resistance to defeat coccomycosis. A certain minus of the variety can be considered quite a large bone.

Kharitonovskaya cherry is one of the partially self-fertile varieties. To increase the fruiting level, Zhukovskaya or Vladimirskaya varieties should be used as pollinators.

Landing rules

For planting seedlings of Kharitonovskaya cherries, well-lit areas with loose, light soil that is enriched with nutrients should be used. It is best if the landing is located on the south side.

The technology for planting cherry seedlings is as follows:

  1. Seedlings should be carefully examined for damage, damage by diseases and pests, as well as the presence of a high-quality and developed root system.
  2. Cherry seedlings adapt more quickly, which are planted in mid-April or October, at least one month before a steady drop in temperature.
  3. The soil at the site of the landing pit should be sandy or loamy and have neutral acidity, as well as good fertility indicators.
  4. The dimensions of the planting pit should be 20% larger than the diameter of the root system of the planted seedling.

It is very important to remember that planting in the autumn period involves the fulfillment of earthing with an earthen roller 40 centimeters high. Such an event will insure the root system of the seedling from freezing.

Care requirements

Activities for the care of cherries consist in the implementation of the correct pruning of the crown, systematic feeding and plentiful watering in the dry period.

Care instructions for cherries of the Kharitonovskaya variety

  1. It is necessary to regularly mulch the soil around the cherry with compost or sawdust, which protects the soil from overdrying and crusting.
  2. If fertilizers were applied when planting a seedling, there is no need to feed the plants for the first couple of years.
  3. Every two years in the process of autumn digging, organic fertilizers are required in the form of compost, peat or rotted manure.
  4. Immediately after awakening the plants after winter rest, a mixture based on ammonium nitrate or urea should be made under the cherry.
  5. At the vegetation stage twice (after flowering and after two weeks), nitrogen or complex fertilizers with a high content of trace elements are applied.
  6. Every five years it is necessary to add lime to the soil, which will insure the plant from a decrease in yield with high soil acidity.
  7. At the stage of mass flowering and fruit formation, abundant irrigation of the plant should be carried out.

To prevent breakage of branches in the winter, a systematic shaking of snow should be carried out. It is very useful to sprinkle a tree trunk with a dense snow layer and sawdust, which will delay flowering for a week and reduce the risk of damage to flowers as a result of return frosts.

Diseases and Pests

At the end of the growing season and after harvesting, trees should be sprayed with special solutions against coccomycosis and holey spotting. To protect the plant from fungal infections, it is necessary to clean and destroy fallen leaves in a timely manner.

The stem of the tree should be whitened to protect the cherry from thermal burns. After whitewashing, the stems must be tied with spruce branches to create a barrier against small rodents in the winter. Regular inspections of cherry trees will allow you to timely detect any changes in the condition of the plant and develop the most effective way to treat cherries.

Gardeners reviews

Haritonovskaya cherries are ripe in terms of ripening and are quite common in private gardens. The plant has earned many positive reviews from Russian gardeners. As for frost resistance, it should be noted that the tree often suffers damage in the winter, which limits the possibility of cultivating this variety of cherries in areas with frosty winters.
