In the Soviet period, breeders managed to breed a significant number of quite successful varieties of different crops, among which the Turgenevka cherry, which is popular among many gardeners today.

Grade description

The Turgenevka cherry variety was obtained from seedlings of free pollination of the Zhukovskaya cherry variety. The originator of the variety was the All-Russian Research Institute for Selection of Fruit Crops. The authorship belongs to A.F. Kolesnikova, T.S. Zvyagina and G. B. Zhdanova. The variety was entered into the State Register of the Central, Central Black Earth and North Caucasus regions.

Features of berries

The broad heart-shaped berries have a mass of about 5 grams. The presence of a medium-sized funnel and a rounded apical part is characteristic. Skin staining pronounced dark red. The pulp of ripened berries is very juicy and quite dense. The juice is dark red.

The stalk length is 5 centimeters. The stone has an oval shape, cream color and occupies about 8% by weight. The stone is easily separated from the pulp of ripened berries.

Assessment of the taste of cherries on a five-point scale is about 3.7 points. The taste is sweet with tangible sourness. The standard sugar content does not exceed 16%. The amount of acid is 1.5%.

Tree characteristic

Cherries of the Turgenevka variety are trees whose height does not exceed three meters. The pyramidal crown crowns the trunk, which, like the main branches, has a pronounced gray-brown color. Branching is average in density. The main color of the foliage is saturated green, with a characteristic sheen. The leaves are double-edged, as a result of which they resemble a boat in shape.

The main fruiting of the Turgenevka cherries occurs in the fourth year and lasts for 15 years. Yields are fairly average, but stable.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages that characterize the Turgenevka cherries are high quality berries, excellent winter hardiness and unpretentiousness of the plant. However, gardeners should take into account the disadvantages, which are the lack of winter hardiness of flower buds, as well as partial self-fertility, which involves planting pollinators.

To increase the fruit production of Turgenevka cherries, suitable pollinators must be cultivated nearby. For this purpose, it is best to plant the varieties "Lyubskaya", "Favorit" or "Melitopolskaya joy". They are inter-pollinated for the Turgenevka cherries.

Landing rules

An annual seedling should have a root system with a diameter of about 30 centimeters. The sizes of the stem can vary from 10 to 15 centimeters in diameter, and the optimal seedling height should not exceed one and a half meters.

Indicators of future yield directly depend on compliance with the rules for planting cherries of this variety:

  • indicators of the level of groundwater occurrence should be about one and a half meters from the surface;
  • the soil in the area prepared for planting a seedling should have neutral acidity, the composition of the soil may be sandy loam;
  • the standard distance between the Turgenevka cherry seedlings should be about two meters;
  • the diameter of the landing pit should be about 60 centimeters, the depth - 50 centimeters;
  • the soil obtained by digging should be mixed with humus, adding wood ash, half a glass of superphosphate and the same amount of potassium chloride; if the soil is clay, a bucket of river sand should be added.

Around the planted seedling, a slight deepening and a low earthen roller should be performed, which will facilitate the conduct of irrigation activities. A good result is mulching, which allows you to save soil moisture and significantly reduces the number of growing weeds.

Care requirements

Care for cherry seedlings of this variety after planting is standard:

  1. It is necessary to maintain constant soil moisture indicators around the planted plants.
  2. The soil in near-stem circles needs regular loosening and mulching, which will prevent the weeds from growing and prevent the formation of a crust on the upper soil layer.
  3. In the autumn period, the soil in near-stem circles should be dug to a shallow depth with the subsequent introduction of humus and double superphosphate.
  4. High-quality humus should be applied under young cherry trees no more than once every three years.
  5. In the spring, it is necessary to carry out the forming pruning of the crown with the obligatory processing of all sections with garden varieties.

Very important as the plants grow older, carry out not only shaping, but also sanitary pruning, as a result of which all diseased, old and damaged areas of the plant should be removed.

Diseases and Pests

Cherry of this variety has sufficient resistance to diseases, but is periodically affected by diseases such as kleisterosporiosis and coccomycosis.

"Turgenevka" may be affected by pests:

  • cherry moth damaging the kidneys;
  • cherry sawfly larvae that parasitize on foliage;
  • cherry aphids affecting young foliage and shoots;
  • cherry weevil damaging flowers and berries of a cherry.

Every year, plants should be treated with Bordeaux liquid. Once every three years it is necessary to use a weak solution of the Nitrofen preparation when processing cherry trees. It is very effective to carry out complex processing of cherries.

  1. The first treatment with insecticides with the addition of fungicides is carried out at the stage of bud dissolution.
  2. The second treatment should be carried out with the same drugs after the mass flowering of the plant.

Equally important is the implementation of timely protective measures against crop destruction by birds and small rodents.

Gardeners reviews

The Turgenevka cherry variety belongs to mid-season and is characterized by high frost resistance, which makes cultivation possible in areas with adverse weather conditions. Judging by the reviews, the stable yield of the variety is about 15 kilograms of ripe and fragrant berries from each tree. In addition, the variety is appreciated by gardeners for their unpretentiousness and quick adaptation after planting.
