More and more farmers and amateur poultry breeders are engaged in quail cultivation. This confirms the existing opinion that such an occupation is beneficial and quite easy to master. Quails are less susceptible to disease than other poultry. Nevertheless, there are cases that the quail's paws move apart immediately after birth, what to do in such a situation? Are leg diseases in birds treated?

Why do quails fall to their feet

Quail hatching is often accompanied by unpleasant events. Approximately 1-2% of newborns cannot walk due to sprawling paws. Poultry farmers even came up with names for such quails: "twine" or "helicopter". The same symptoms can be caused by different reasons.

Paw injuries

The gait function is impaired by the dislocation of the hip. You should not put newly born quails in a box covered with oilcloth. There is no need to put a plastic plate on the floor, on which the paws move apart. The swaddle is capable of slipping and knocking out a bone from a fragile joint. The best bedding is cardboard, newspaper, or a piece of cloth. It is convenient to change them every day, keeping the brooder clean.

Quails can peck at some parts of the body of a weak individual, including legs, especially paws. It is possible to get a fracture during a fright or fight.

This usually happens when quail is kept in an aviary, where an object with sharp corners is carelessly left. Such an injury most likely signals a lack of calcium, protein and other beneficial components in the feed.

Unbalanced nutrition and poor heredity lead to metabolic disorders. As a result, quails develop various diseases, including gout. The deposition of uric acid salts in the tissues causes pain in the limbs. The bird's appetite is weakened, it is pushed away from the feeder. Sick quail keeps apart, moves little. In the area of the joints, growths and seals form. Over time, the paws are bent, they can part.

Other reasons

Some infectious diseases affect the bones, joints, skin and nervous system of quail. Uncertain gait, falls, loose legs, cramps can be signs of fatal ailments.

PullorosisTrembling, closed eyes, inactivity, continuous squeak, frequent falls, dried up droppings at the anus. Young quails are not resistant to infection.
Newcastle diseaseDiarrhea, lack of appetite, heavy breathing, cloudy eyes. Damage to the nervous system manifests itself in uncoordinated movements (paws disperse, the quail often falls on its side), sagging wings, a twisted neck, head thrown back, paralysis.
Avian flu (psittacosis)Tousled feathers, unkempt appearance, convulsions.

The lack of trace elements in the body causes curling of the toes in quails. They have limbs from time to time, their paws can even part. A systematic lack of vitamin D leads to a disease such as rickets. Quails are more likely to get sick. There is a noticeable lag in the development of the diaper, thinness. Beak, claws soften.

The limbs and ribcage are bent, the paws weaken and move apart. The chicken withers away, does not show cheerfulness.

Treatment methods

Novice poultry farmers are trying to put quail with moving paws on their feet. To do this, the lower limbs of the baby are tied with a thread above the shins. Between the loops on the legs, a distance of no more than 1 cm is left. This allows the swaddle to move. The legs cannot move apart.

There is a possibility that after 2-3 days the femur of the quilt will jump into place. First, the baby needs to be urged to move with his hand. When he gets used to the food, a bowl of food and drink is placed at a short distance so that the quilt has an incentive to approach them. If the dressing is done immediately after removal from the incubator, then the bird has a chance to survive. True, a quail, whose legs were moving apart, will lag slightly behind their peers in gaining mass.

Experienced poultry farmers do not waste time on this and reject babies with moving paws right away. Some owners throw out the last couple of quail eggs if they are lagging behind others in pecking. Experience shows that quails with moving legs will come out of them.

Nevertheless, since the problem exists, new ideas for fixing it are born. It is not time-consuming to place newborn cripples in a watering can inserted in a glass. The legs of the quilt are tightly shifted, and it constantly stretches upward from the trap, moving the hip joint with a small range of motion. This is the most effective method. The average duration of the procedure is 5 hours.

Pullorosis and Newcastle disease are incurable. In order to avoid an epidemic, at the first suspicion of such an infection, quails with similar symptoms are isolated and tested in a veterinary laboratory. When the causative agents of these diseases are identified, birds are burned. The place where the quails are kept is cleaned of droppings and disinfected.

For the treatment of bird flu, they go to a veterinarian. Against gout, use "Novatofan", "Urotropin", sodium bicarbonate.

If a quail has broken a leg, then it is best to see a doctor. Even in this case, the owner needs to provide the bird with first aid as soon as possible. If the quail twitches, moves on moving legs, the situation will deteriorate sharply and can go into a hopeless stage. In the presence of skin lesions, the place around the quail wound is cut with scissors and treated with furacelin. Small bones are taken out, washed off the dirt and smeared with iodine. Then the paw of the quail is securely fixed with a bandage, tying it to an even peg.

How to prevent a problem from arising

In order to reduce the percentage of quail with parted legs, eggs are taken from quails that have been laying for more than 3 weeks to incubate the chicks. Medium-sized specimens are selected and scanned through an ovoscope to reject defective ones. Incubation rules are strictly followed.

They carefully monitor the young so that the breeding herd is formed from quails without hereditary diseases.

The most important factor for strengthening the immunity of birds is a balanced diet. The purity of the content, maintaining the temperature within 20 ° C has a beneficial effect on the health of the quail. Under these conditions, livestock losses are minimized.
